Early Life and Education

John Warner was born in a place called Great Stanmore in Middlesex, England. He went to the famous University of Oxford to study. He earned several degrees there, showing he was a very bright student.

He received his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, in 1520. Then, he earned a Master of Arts in 1525. He continued his studies in medicine, getting a Bachelor of Medicine in 1529 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1535.

His Time at Oxford

After getting his first degree, John Warner became a fellow at All Souls College, Oxford. This meant he was a senior member of the college. On May 26, 1536, he was chosen to be the Warden of All Souls College. The Warden is like the head or leader of the college.

Important Roles and Achievements

In 1540, King Henry VIII himself chose John Warner for a special new job. He became the first-ever Regius Professor of Physic (which means medicine) at Oxford. This was a very important position, showing his skill as a doctor and teacher.

He held this royal professorship until 1554, when he decided to retire from it. After that, he took on another big role at the university. He became the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, which is like being the chief executive of the whole university.

On October 17, 1561, John Warner also became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. This is a group of the most respected doctors in England.

Church Career

Besides his work in medicine and at the university, John Warner was also a churchman. He was ordained, meaning he became a priest. He served in many different church roles in various towns.

Some of his church jobs included being a rector, a prebend, and an archdeacon. He was also a canon and even a royal chaplain, serving the king. On October 15, 1559, he was named the Dean of Winchester. This made him the head of the clergy at Winchester Cathedral.
