His Heroic Actions in World War II
John Willis was part of the Battle of Iwo Jima. This was a very tough battle against Japan. On February 28, 1945, John Willis was helping wounded Marines. He was in a dangerous spot, under heavy enemy fire.
He saw that a bunker was hurting many Marines. A bunker is a strong, protected military building. He ran forward to attack it. He threw grenades at the bunker to stop the enemy.
Even though he was hit by enemy fire, he kept going. He threw eight grenades. He was hit again and again. But he did not stop. He kept throwing grenades until he died. His brave actions saved many lives.

The Medal of Honor is the highest award a person can get in the U.S. military. It is given for extreme bravery. John Willis received this medal because he showed amazing courage.
