John Harlan Willis (born June 10, 1921 – died February 28, 1945) was a brave sailor in the United States Navy. He earned the highest military award, the Medal of Honor, for his amazing courage during World War II. He showed incredible bravery while helping his fellow soldiers.

Who Was John Harlan Willis?

John Harlan Willis was born in Columbia, Tennessee. He joined the United States Navy and became a Pharmacist's Mate First Class. This means he was a medic, someone who helps injured soldiers. He served during World War II, a very big global conflict.

His Heroic Actions in World War II

John Willis was part of the Battle of Iwo Jima. This was a very tough battle against Japan. On February 28, 1945, John Willis was helping wounded Marines. He was in a dangerous spot, under heavy enemy fire.

He saw that a bunker was hurting many Marines. A bunker is a strong, protected military building. He ran forward to attack it. He threw grenades at the bunker to stop the enemy.

Even though he was hit by enemy fire, he kept going. He threw eight grenades. He was hit again and again. But he did not stop. He kept throwing grenades until he died. His brave actions saved many lives.

The Medal of Honor

The Medal of Honor is the highest award a person can get in the U.S. military. It is given for extreme bravery. John Willis received this medal because he showed amazing courage. He put his own life at risk to save others. He was given the medal after he died. This is called "posthumous recognition."

A Ship Named in His Honor
