Early Life and Local Politics
John Wise was born in St. Thomas, Ontario. Before becoming a national politician, he was a dairy farmer. He also served in local government in the St. Thomas - Elgin area:
- He was a township councillor and deputy reeve for Yarmouth Township from 1966 to 1967.
- He became the reeve of Yarmouth Township from 1967 to 1968.
- In 1969, he served as the warden for Elgin County.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
Wise was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada in 1972. He represented the area of Elgin for the Progressive Conservative party. He was re-elected four more times: in 1974, 1979, 1980, and 1984.
Minister of Agriculture
John Wise held the important role of Minister of Agriculture twice.
- First, he served in this role under Prime Minister Joe Clark from June 4, 1979, to March 2, 1980.
- Later, he was Minister of Agriculture again under Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. This term lasted from September 17, 1984, to September 14, 1988.
Retirement and Later Work
John Wise retired from being a Member of Parliament in 1988. He returned to his farm, though he had sold his dairy operations in the 1970s. After leaving politics, he continued to be involved in agriculture. He served on several boards related to farming:
