Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Wynyard (died 20 February 1752) was an important officer in the British Army. He served for many years, rising through the ranks and holding key positions in different parts of the world. His career shows how dedicated soldiers contributed to the British military during the 1700s.

Early Military Career

John Wynyard began his military journey on 25 December 1703. He was made a captain-lieutenant in Roger Elliott's Regiment of Foot. This meant he was a captain who also helped the regiment with daily tasks as an adjutant. By 1709, he was a full captain. At this time, he was busy recruiting new soldiers in England.

In 1713, his regiment was no longer needed and was disbanded. This meant John Wynyard was placed on half-pay. Being on half-pay meant he received only half his usual salary. This was common for officers when their regiments were not active.

Rising Through the Ranks

John Wynyard continued his service with the 17th Regiment of Foot. This regiment played a part in the Jacobite rising of 1715. This was a time when some people in Britain tried to bring back the old royal family to the throne. Wynyard's regiment helped to stop this uprising.

His hard work paid off. On 10 July 1718, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the 17th Regiment. This was a significant step up in his career. Later, on 20 November 1739, he became a colonel. He was put in charge of the new 4th Regiment of Marines. Marines are soldiers who serve both on land and at sea.

Command and Leadership

John Wynyard's leadership skills were highly valued. On 31 August 1742, he was transferred back to be the colonel of the 17th Foot. This showed how much trust the army had in him to lead this important regiment.

He also served for many years as the commander-in-chief in two key locations: Gibraltar and Port Mahon. Gibraltar is a very important naval base at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. Port Mahon is on the island of Menorca, also in the Mediterranean. Being commander-in-chief meant he was the top military leader in these areas.

In September 1747, John Wynyard received his highest promotion. He became a lieutenant-general. This is a very senior rank in the army. He passed away in 1752 and was buried in the famous Westminster Abbey in London. Many important people in British history are buried there.
