John Yelloly (born April 30, 1774 – died January 31, 1842) was an English doctor. He was known for helping to start an important medical society and for his research into kidney stones.

Early Life and Education

John Yelloly was born in Alnwick, Northumberland, England, in 1774. He was the youngest of seven children. His father passed away when John was very young. His mother, Jane, helped him with his early education at home.

He later went to grammar school in Alnwick. After that, he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He earned his medical degree (M.D.) in 1799.

Medical Career

In 1800, John Yelloly moved to London. From 1807 to 1818, he worked as a doctor at the London Hospital. This was an important job that helped many people.

Founding a Medical Society

In 1805, John Yelloly helped start an important group called the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society. He worked with another doctor, Alexander John Gaspard Marcet, to create this society. John Yelloly was one of its first secretaries. He also worked hard to build the society's library. This library helped doctors learn and share new medical knowledge.

In 1814, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a special honor for scientists and researchers.

Later Career and Retirement

In 1818, John Yelloly moved to Carrow Abbey, near Norwich. In 1820, he became a doctor at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.

He retired from practicing medicine in 1832 because he was quite wealthy. After retiring, he lived at Woodton Hall, near Norwich.

Later Years and Death

In April 1840, John Yelloly had an accident. He was thrown from a type of carriage called a phaeton. This accident caused him to become paralyzed on his right side.

On January 28, 1842, he had a severe stroke. This caused paralysis on his left side as well. He passed away on January 31, 1842, at Cavendish Hall, Suffolk.

In 1806, John Yelloly married the daughter of Samuel Tyssen. They had children together.

Research and Publications

John Yelloly was interested in medical research. He published several important papers.

Research on Kidney Stones

In 1829, he published a paper called "Remarks on the Tendency to Calculous Diseases." This paper was in the Philosophical Transactions journal. It was based on his study of kidney stones that had been removed from patients at the Norwich Hospital. He continued this research and published more work on the same topic in 1830.

Other Works

In 1837, he wrote a pamphlet called On Arrangements connected with the Medical Relief of the Sick Poor. This work discussed how to provide medical help for people who were poor.

He also presented seven papers to the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society. Two of these papers were about paralysis caused by brain tumors.
