Story of the Movie
Johnny "Pono" Kapahala is a young snowboarding champion. He lives in Vermont. Johnny travels to Oahu, Hawaii, for a special event. His grandfather, Johnny Tsunami, a famous surf legend, is getting married.
Johnny is excited to have a new uncle to spend time with. But he soon finds out his "Uncle Chris" is a 12-year-old boy. Chris acts like a bit of a brat.
Meeting the Dirt Devils
The next day, Johnny and his friend Sam see Chris. Chris is heading off with a group called the Dirt Devils. Johnny and Sam follow them. They find a cool skate park set up on a barge.
Before Chris can show off his skills, Johnny and Sam impress everyone. They skate on the barge, showing Chris up. Chris gets annoyed and runs away. When he gets home, he argues with Johnny. He tells Johnny to leave him alone.
Learning to Get Along
The next morning, Johnny goes surfing. He meets Valerie and gives her a surfing lesson. This makes Chris feel jealous and upset.
Johnny and Sam try to get Chris to hang out with them. They convince him to join them for a day. With Valerie, they go dirtboarding and ride ATVs. Chris is surprised to find he actually has a good time. He and Johnny finally start to get along.
Trouble with the Group
The group goes to a dirtboarding event. They hope to meet Akoni Kama and find sponsors. But the Dirt Devils kick Valerie out of their group. They say she's hanging out with the "competition" (Johnny and Chris).
Chris runs away from home again. Johnny and Sam find him arguing with Jared. Jared is the leader of the Dirt Devils. Chris agrees to do a dangerous jump the next day. This jump is planned for the night before the new surf shop opens. It's also during the rehearsal dinner for Carla and Johnny's grandpa's wedding.
Fixing Things
Carla talks with Johnny's grandpa. She decides to move back to Pennsylvania. Chris overhears this conversation. He feels bad for causing trouble between them. He doesn't know how to fix it.
Johnny tells Chris he's lucky to have a smart nephew. With help from Valerie, Sam, and Johnny, they fix the surf shop. They also decide to stop hanging out with the Dirt Devils.
The opening of Johnny's grandpa's store is a big success. Even professional dirtboarder Akoni Kama comes to the event. Meanwhile, across the street, the Dirt Devils are having problems. Troy is arguing with Valerie's dad about moving to California.
The Big Race
Johnny and Chris finally become good friends. Chris helps Johnny with the race. He describes the course that Valerie's father set up.
The race begins, and Troy is in the lead for a long time. But near the end, he falls. He crashes into a barrier at the finish line while trying a trick. Johnny wins the race!
Troy is then arrested. The police find out he told Jared to damage the shop. Jared is sent back to his parents. Carla and Johnny's Grandpa decide to get married after all. Both families are finally happy.
