Johns, Oklahoma facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Johns was once a small community in Pushmataha County, Oklahoma. It was located north of a town called Antlers. Today, Johns is considered a ghost town, meaning it's a place where most people have left, and little remains of the original settlement.

What Was Johns?

Johns was a small settlement in southeastern Oklahoma. It was a place where people lived and worked for a short time in the early 1900s. Like many small communities, its existence was often tied to specific services or industries.

A Short-Lived Post Office

One important sign of a community in the past was having its own post office. Johns had a post office that opened on September 28, 1912. However, it didn't stay open for very long. The post office closed less than three years later, on May 15, 1915. This short period suggests that the community itself was not very large or didn't last for many years.

How Johns Got Its Name

The community of Johns got its name from a nearby area called Johns Valley. This valley was named after a person named Henry A. Johns. Henry A. Johns was a Choctaw Indian who received a land allotment in the area. A "land allotment" means he was given a specific piece of land, which was a common practice during that time for Native American individuals.
