Johnsonville is a small community in Indiana, a state in the United States. It's not a city or town with its own government. Instead, it's an unincorporated community located in Steuben Township, within Warren County.
History of Johnsonville
Johnsonville was officially planned and marked out on a map on July 8, 1874. It was started by John R. Johnson, Sr., near a place called Sumner Station.
A post office opened in Johnsonville on December 2, 1875. George W. Johnson was the first postmaster. By September 1875, about 50 people lived in the community.
Johnsonville had several businesses back then. These included a dry goods store and a tan yard that made leather. There was also a druggist, a doctor, a lawyer, and a blacksmith. Other jobs included a grain dealer, a railway agent, a tinker, and someone who ran a boarding-house. By 1913, the population grew to about 80 people.
The community was founded at an important spot where two train lines met. One was the existing Toledo, Wabash and Western Railroad. The other was a new line called the Coal Branch of the Chicago, Danville and Vincennes Railroad. This new line, also known as the "Pumpkin Vine" Railroad, was built in 1872.
This great location helped Johnsonville grow at first. However, trains stopped running on the Pumpkin Vine line by 1880. This was only six years after Johnsonville was officially established. When the train tracks were removed soon after, the community became less important. It began to shrink. The post office closed on August 31, 1907.
As of 2007, Johnsonville is home to a non-denominational Christian church and a few houses.
