Early Life and Growth
Jon Minnoch grew very large from a young age. When he was just 12 years old, he weighed about 294 pounds (133 kilograms). He was also quite tall, around 5 feet 7 inches (170 centimeters).
By the time he was 22, Jon had grown to 6 feet 1 inch (185 centimeters) tall. His weight also increased, reaching about 500 pounds (227 kilograms).
Hospital Stay and Health Challenges
Jon's weight kept going up steadily. In March 1978, when he was 36 years old, he had to go to the hospital. He was having serious problems with his heart and breathing.
That same year, Jon Minnoch got married to Jeannette. She weighed only 110 pounds (50 kilograms). This meant they held a record for the biggest weight difference between a married couple! They later had two children together.
Doctors found that Jon had a condition called massive generalized edema. This means his body was holding onto a lot of extra fluid. When he entered the hospital, doctors believed much of his weight was from this extra fluid.
Moving Jon was very difficult. It took more than a dozen firefighters and rescue workers to get him to the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle. They used a special stretcher to transport him. At the hospital, he needed two beds pushed together. It even took 13 people just to help him roll over to change his bed sheets.
Weight Loss and Later Life
After 16 months in the hospital, Jon was allowed to go home. He had followed a very strict diet of 1,200 calories per day. He lost a huge amount of weight, about 924 pounds (419 kilograms)! This was one of the biggest weight losses ever recorded by a human. At this point, he weighed about 476 pounds (216 kilograms).
However, Jon's weight started to increase again. Just over a year later, in October 1981, he had to go back to the hospital. His weight had gone up to about 952 pounds (432 kilograms).
Doctors realized that his edema condition was very hard to treat and could not be cured. Sadly, they decided to stop treatment. Jon Minnoch passed away 23 months later, on September 10, 1983, at the age of 41. At the time of his death, he weighed about 798 pounds (362 kilograms).
