Origin | Geneva, New York, USA, 1953 |
The Jonagold is a popular type of apple. It was first created in 1953 in New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, which is part of Cornell University. This apple is a mix of two other well-known apples: the crisp 'Golden Delicious' and the red 'Jonathan'.
Jonagold apples are usually large and sweet. They have a thin skin. Because of their size, many apple growers around the world like to grow them.
The Jonagold apple has a green-yellow color with red stripes or patches. Sometimes, the skin can be almost entirely red or green. This apple is juicy and has a fluffy, crisp texture. It tastes both sweet and a little bit sour, which makes it very refreshing.
Jonagold apples are very popular in Belgium. In the United States, the USApple Association says it is one of the top fifteen most popular apple types.
How Jonagold Apples Grow
The Jonagold apple is special because of how it reproduces. Its pollen (the tiny grains that help plants make seeds) cannot fertilize other apple trees. This means a Jonagold apple tree needs pollen from a different kind of apple tree to grow its own fruit. It also cannot help other apple trees grow their fruit.
