The Jonas Cutting–Edward Kent House is a really old and special home in Bangor, Maine. It was built a long time ago, in 1836-1837. This house is famous for its unique and fancy Greek Revival style.

It was built as a duplex, meaning it had two separate living spaces. The first people to live there were Edward Kent and his law partner, Jonas Cutting. Edward Kent later became the mayor of Bangor and even the Governor of Maine. Jonas Cutting became a judge on Maine's highest court. This historic house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

What Makes the Jonas Cutting–Edward Kent House Special?

The Cutting-Kent House is located near downtown Bangor. It is a large, two-story wooden building. The house has a very detailed and unique Greek Revival design.

The front of the house has four sections with special columns. These columns are called Doric pilasters. The first floor has fancy fluted Doric columns. They are topped with carved wreaths. The middle sections have the two main entrances for each home. The outer sections have tall windows. These windows have decorative iron railings. The windows on the top floor also have pretty railings.

Each side of the house has a rounded window section. These also have railings. There are decorative lines between the floors and above the second floor. The roof is low and flat. Later additions were built at the back of the house. These were added in the late 1800s.

The house was built in 1836-1837. It was built for Edward Kent and Jonas Cutting. Edward Kent was the mayor of Bangor at the time. Jonas Cutting was his partner in their law firm.

This house was very fancy for its time. It was the kind of home important people lived in. Many of these people were rich lumber business owners. Experts believe this house's style is one-of-a-kind in New England.

Edward Kent later became the Governor of Maine. He served two terms from 1838 to 1840. Jonas Cutting became a judge on the Maine Supreme Judicial Court in 1859. Before that, he worked for the country's diplomatic service.
