The Jonas R. Shurtleff House is a really old and special house located in Winslow, Maine. You can find it right on United States Route 201. This house was built around 1850 and is a great example of a unique building style called Gothic Revival. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

What Makes the Shurtleff House Special?

The Jonas R. Shurtleff House stands in southern Winslow. It's on the west side of US 201. The house is a short distance south of where US 201 meets Maine State Route 137.

Outside the House: Cool Features

This house has two stories and is made of wood. It has a pointed roof, which is called a gabled roof. The outside walls are made of vertical wooden boards. The house sits on a strong foundation made of granite stone.

Look closely at the roof! The main pointed part and the smaller side pointed parts have fancy wooden decorations. These are called bargeboard trim. The windows on the first floor have special tops. They have extended ledges supported by small, paired brackets. The second-floor windows have square-shaped molding above them.

The front door has a cool porch. It has a crisscross design that looks like Gothic arches. Above the main entrance, there's a window with three parts. This is known as a Palladian style window. Even higher up, in the very tip of the roof, there's a triangular window with many small glass panes.

Inside the House: Simple Style

The inside of the Shurtleff House is decorated with a simpler style. It uses what's called Greek Revival trim. This means the decorations are inspired by ancient Greek buildings.

History of the Shurtleff House

The Jonas R. Shurtleff House was built between 1850 and 1853. Jonas Shurtleff bought the land for the house in 1849. We don't know who designed this unique house.

Why is it a Landmark?

The house has some very creative and imaginative features. These ideas came from published books about Gothic architecture. However, many parts of the house were designed in a local, traditional way. This means they were built using common methods and styles from the area. Since it was built, the Shurtleff House has been a well-known local landmark. It has also been a small tourist attraction for many years.
