Early Career and Big Wins
Jonathan Cantwell started his professional cycling journey in 2008. He quickly showed his talent, especially in sprint finishes. A sprinter is a cyclist who is very fast over short distances. He was also a good lead-out man. This means he helped his team's main sprinter get into the best position to win a race.
He achieved many victories in his early career. For example, he won stages in races like the Tour of Murrieta and the Tour of the Murray River. In 2011, he won the Australian National Criterium Championships. A criterium is a bike race held on a short course, often in a city.
Racing in the Tour de France
In 2012, Jonathan joined the Team Saxo Bank team. That year, he made his first appearance in a Grand Tour. A Grand Tour is one of the three biggest and longest cycling races in the world. These are the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, and Vuelta a España.
Jonathan raced in the 2012 Tour de France. His main job was to help his team's sprinter, Juan José Haedo. Jonathan showed his strength by finishing sixth in stage 4 of the race. This was a great achievement for him. He completed the entire Tour de France, finishing 137th overall.
Switching Sports
After the 2013 season, Jonathan left Saxo–Tinkoff. He then joined Drapac Professional Cycling for the 2014 season. At the end of 2014, Jonathan decided to retire from professional cycling.
He chose to try new sports instead. He started competing in duathlon and triathlon. A duathlon involves running and cycling. A triathlon includes swimming, cycling, and running. He even competed in the 2017 ITU World Triathlon Series.
