Jonathan "Jock" Paget (born 17 November 1983) is a talented New Zealand equestrian rider. He won a bronze medal in Team eventing at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. In 2013, he made history by becoming only the second rider ever to win the famous Badminton Horse Trials on his very first try. The first was fellow New Zealander Mark Todd.

Jock Paget's Early Life

Jock Paget was born in Wellsford, New Zealand. In 1986, his family moved to Sydney, Australia. He started riding horses when he was 18 years old. He even went to a rodeo school!

After that, he got a job helping Australian event rider Kevin McNab. Under Kevin's guidance, Jock quickly improved his riding skills. In less than two years, he went from never having jumped a fence to competing at a high level in eventing.

In 2006, Jock tried to start his own horse business in Sydney. However, in 2007, a horse sickness called the equine influenza outbreak stopped all horse travel in much of Australia. This meant Jock couldn't ride or compete.

Because of this, Frances Stead, a supporter of New Zealand eventing, invited Jock to come back to New Zealand. In September 2007, he became the main rider at her Clifton Eventers farm in Muriwai, near Auckland.

Jock Paget's Competitive Career

Jock Paget competed with a horse named Clifton Promise. This horse was a 16.3 hands (67 inches, 170 cm) bay Thoroughbred gelding, born in 1998. In April 2010, they competed in their first major four-star competition, the Rolex Kentucky Three Day. They finished in 27th place.

In June 2010, Jock and Clifton Promise traveled to the United Kingdom. They were getting ready for the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Kentucky. At the WEG, the pair finished in seventh place.

After the WEG, Clifton Promise stayed in the UK. Jock returned to New Zealand to compete with other horses. He came back to his base in Surrey, UK, in February 2011. Frances Stead sent more young horses to the UK for Jock to train and compete. These included Clifton Razz, Clifton Signature, Clifton Cognac, and Clifton Dickara.

Since moving to England, Jock has worked closely with other top New Zealand riders like Mark Todd and Andrew Nicholson. He also trained with Erik Duvander, the UK-based New Zealand Eventing Coach. In March 2011, Jock also started riding another horse named Clifton Lush.
