The Jonathan Wheeler House is a really old and special home in Canterbury, Connecticut. It was built around 1760. This house is unique because it has features that were not common back then. For example, it has chimneys on the ends and a hallway right in the middle. Using bricks for a house in this country area was also unusual at that time. Because it is so special, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This list helps protect important historical places.

What Makes This House Special?

The Jonathan Wheeler House is in a quiet, country part of northern Canterbury. It sits close to North Society Road. The house is part of a large piece of land, about 85 acres, that has always been connected to it.

House Design and Look

This house is 1-1/2 stories tall. This means it has one full floor and a smaller half-floor above it. It is made of brick. The roof slopes down on the sides, and there are chimneys at each end of the house. The front of the house has five sections, called bays. The main door is in the middle. Above the door, there is a window with seven small glass panes.

Inside, the house has a "central hall plan." This means there is a main hallway in the middle. Living rooms, called parlors, are on both sides of this hall. The kitchen is at the back of the house. Stairs to the attic are in the hall on the right side. Many original parts of the house are still there. These include the wooden details, the plaster on the walls, and the brickwork. A newer wooden part has been added to the back and right side of the house.

Who Built the House?

Jonathan Wheeler built this house around 1760. He moved to Canterbury in 1751 from a town called Stonington, Connecticut. His family was well-known in Stonington. Jonathan bought many pieces of land in the Canterbury area in the 1750s.

The house is unusual for a few reasons. Its central hallway was not common when it was built. Most houses then had a chimney in the very center. Also, using brick for a single-story house in a rural area was rare. The house stayed in the Wheeler family until 1870.
