Jones (Animal Farm) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mr. Jones is a key character in the famous book Animal Farm by George Orwell. He is the original owner of Manor Farm, where the story begins. Mr. Jones is known for being a very bad and neglectful farmer, which sets the stage for the animals' big rebellion.

Mr. Jones's Farm Life

Mr. Jones was once a good farmer, but he became very sad and stopped caring about his farm. Because of this, he began to ignore both the animals and the farm buildings. The animals were often hungry and had to work very hard.

The Animals Take Over

Inspired by an old pig named Old Major, the animals decide they have had enough. They rebel against Mr. Jones, his wife, and his farm workers. The animals successfully drive them off the farm. This event, called the Rebellion, was supposed to end the animals' hard lives and hunger forever.

Attempts to Reclaim the Farm

After being kicked out, Mr. Jones lives at the Red Lion Inn. He feels sorry for himself and talks to other farmers who are confused by what happened. One day, Mr. Jones and some neighboring farmers, like Frederick and Pilkington, try to take Animal Farm back. They attack the farm, but the animals are ready.

The Battle of the Cowshed

The animals, led by Snowball and his clever plans, fight back bravely. This fight is known as the Battle of the Cowshed. The animals are very organized, which scares many of the men. Mr. Jones and the other humans are defeated and run away from the farm for good.

Mr. Jones's Later Life and Legacy

Many years pass in the story. Eventually, the book mentions that Mr. Jones has died. By this time, most of the animals who were alive during the Rebellion have also passed away. Many of the events and even some heroes, like Snowball and Boxer, are slowly forgotten. Only a few animals, like the pigs, Moses the raven, Clover, and Benjamin, still remember Mr. Jones and the days before the Rebellion.
