Discovering the Joolal Tree
The Joolal tree is a fascinating part of Australia's natural world. It can grow as a small shrub or a medium-sized tree. It is known for its unique winged fruits.
What Does the Joolal Tree Look Like?
This tree usually grows to be about 1 to 10 meters (3 to 33 feet) tall. It is a deciduous tree, which means it sheds its leaves every year, usually during the dry season. This helps it save water.
The Joolal tree has bark that is grey to brown. This bark often peels off in rough, flaky pieces. Its leaves are shaped like narrow ovals, usually between 28 to 75 millimeters (1 to 3 inches) long and 5 to 35 millimeters (0.2 to 1.4 inches) wide.
Flowers and Fruit
From July to January, the Joolal tree produces pretty flowers. These flowers are usually white, cream, or light green. After the flowers, the tree grows its special fruit. These fruits are dry and have a flattened, oval shape with wings. They are about 15 to 40 millimeters (0.6 to 1.6 inches) long. The Joolal tree is quite similar to another tree called Terminalia bursarina, but the Joolal has bigger leaves and fruits.
Where Does the Joolal Tree Grow?
You can find the Joolal tree in different natural places across northern Australia. It grows in the Kimberley region of Western Australia and also in the Northern Territory. It prefers sandy or stony soils, especially those found over laterite or sandstone rocks.
