Jordan Lang was an important leader in South Carolina. He lived from 1813 to 1893. He served in the state government during a time called the Reconstruction era. This was after the American Civil War.

Who Was Jordan Lang?

Jordan Lang was born into slavery. He was owned by the Lang family. After slavery ended, he became a free man. He worked hard to make a difference in his community.

He married Kizzie Keith. Together, they had ten children. Jordan Lang was also a member of the Macedonoa Baptist Church in Darlington.

A Leader in Government

Jordan Lang became a state legislator. This means he was a lawmaker in the South Carolina House of Representatives. He represented Darlington County, South Carolina. He served in this role from 1868 to 1872.

During his time in government, he worked with other important leaders. Some of his fellow African American legislators from Darlington were John Boston (politician) and Alfred Rush. He also worked with a white legislator named G. Holliman. Sadly, Alfred Rush was attacked and killed in 1867.

Jordan Lang's Legacy

Jordan Lang's contributions were remembered. A place called Lang Township was named after him. A school was also named in his honor. Lang Township was later part of the Palmetto School District.

A writer named Lawrence Chesterfield Bryant wrote about Jordan Lang. He included Lang in his 1974 book. The book was called South Carolina Negro Legislators: A Glorious Success. It shared the stories of many African American politicians in South Carolina.
