Jordan Springs is a small, unincorporated community located about four miles from Winchester, Virginia. An unincorporated community means it's a group of homes or businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. This place got its name from a large farm and a special vacation spot that the Jordan family built here. They built it because of natural sulphur springs, which are like special water sources. Local Native American people had known about these springs for hundreds of years.

The History of Jordan Springs

A Place for Healing and Fun

In the year 1800, the Jordan White Sulphur Springs resort opened here. People at that time believed that the water from these springs had special powers to help people feel better. Over many years, the Jordan family built three different hotels on this site.

A famous person named David Holmes visited Jordan Springs. He was a very important politician who served as a US Congressman for five terms from Virginia's 2nd congressional district. He was also chosen to be the governor of the Mississippi Territory and later became the first elected governor of the state of Mississippi. He came to Jordan Springs when he was not feeling well and passed away here in 1832.

From Old Hotels to a New One

The most well-known hotel, the historic Jordan Springs Hotel, was built in 1893. It continued the tradition of being a popular place for people to visit. This hotel is located along a stream called Lick Run in Frederick County, Virginia. You can find it on Jordan Springs Road (which is also known as VA 664), just north of a place called Devils Backbone. Before this hotel, the Jordan family had already built two other hotels on the same spot. Over time, other resorts became popular, and people's tastes changed, so the hotel's business became slower.

A New Chapter for the Building

In 1953, a group called the Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity bought the property. They used the building as a religious center and a school for people studying to become priests. Later, as fewer people joined their group, they rented out the space to another organization. This organization used the building as a place to help people. This continued until 1999.

Today, this large historic building, which is about 48,000-square-foot (4,500 m2), is known as the Historic Jordan Springs Event & Cultural Centre. It's now used for weddings, special events, and conferences. It also offers office space for businesses. The property is owned and managed by Tonie Wallace-Aitken and Greig Aitken, with help from their event coordinator, Colt Nutter. The mail for Jordan Springs goes to Stephenson, Virginia.
