Jordi Nadal (born March 14, 1929 – died December 8, 2020) was an important Spanish economist and historian. He earned a special degree called a doctorate in history from the University of Barcelona. Later, he became a professor at universities like the University of Valencia and Pompeu Fabra University. He helped us understand how Spain's economy and population changed over time.

Jordi Nadal's Life and Work
Jordi Nadal went to high school in Girona and Barcelona. He loved learning and continued his studies in places like Toulouse, Paris, and Pavia. In 1957, he earned his doctorate in history from the University of Barcelona. This high degree showed his deep knowledge in the field.
He taught Catalan and Spanish at the University of Liverpool for a short time. Then, he became a professor of economic history. Economic history is about how economies have grown and changed over many years. He taught at the University of Barcelona, the University of Valencia, and the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
Helping Others Learn
Jordi Nadal was very active in the world of history and economics. In 1972, he helped start the Spanish Association of Economic History (AEHE). He even became its president later on. He also led the Association of Historical Demography (ADEH). Demography is the study of how human populations change.
He also started and edited a magazine called the Journal of Industrial History. This magazine shared new ideas about how industries developed over time. Jordi Nadal was also part of a group that helped the United Nations write a new dictionary about population studies.
His Contributions and Awards
Jordi Nadal wrote many articles for history magazines in Spain and other countries. He was especially good at studying how populations grew and how industries developed in Catalonia and all of Spain.
He received many honors for his work:
- In 1997, he was given the Creu de Sant Jordi, which is a very important award in Catalonia.
- In 2000, he was recognized by the College of Economists of Catalonia.
- In 2009, he received an award for his long and successful academic career from the AEHE.
- He also received honorary doctorates from Universitat Pompeu Fabra in 2010 and Universitat de Girona in 2013. An "honoris causa" degree is given to someone who has made great contributions, even if they didn't study there.
