Jordi de Sant Jordi (born in the late 1390s – died around 1424) was a famous poet and a brave knight from Valencia. He lived during a special time called the Valencian Golden Age. This was a period when Catalan literature, especially poetry, became very important.
Jordi de Sant Jordi was one of the first and most important writers of this time. Another famous poet from his era was Ausiàs March. Queen Margarida of Aragon-Prades, who was the wife of King Martí I, supported his work.
Early Life and Career
Jordi de Sant Jordi was born in the Kingdom of Valencia. His father was a freed "morisco" slave. A morisco was a Muslim who had converted to Christianity in Spain.
Jordi de Sant Jordi became a Chamberlain at the court of King Alfons V of Aragon. A chamberlain was an important official who managed the king's household. Even though he had this important job, he is best known for his amazing poetry.
Adventures and Poetry
Jordi de Sant Jordi joined King Alfons V on a trip to the Kingdom of Naples. During this trip, he was captured by the forces of Francesco Sforza. This happened on May 30, 1423.
While he was held captive, he wrote one of his most famous poems. This poem is called 'Prisoner'. It shares his feelings and experiences from that difficult time.
Later Life and Legacy
Jordi de Sant Jordi passed away around the year 1424. His poems continued to inspire other writers. One writer who seemed to learn from his work was Joan Roís de Corella.
A famous work called The Coronation of Lord Jordi was written by Iñigo López de Mendoza. This work was dedicated to Jordi de Sant Jordi, showing how much he was respected.
