Jorge Raúl Porcel de Peralta (born September 7, 1936 – died May 16, 2006), known as Jorge Porcel, was a famous Argentine comedy actor and TV host. People often called him El Gordo de América, which means America's Fat Guy. Many consider Jorge Porcel, along with Alberto Olmedo, to be one of Argentina's best comedy actors of the 1900s.
Film Career
Jorge Porcel acted in 49 movies. His first movie was Disloque en Mar del Plata in 1962. His last movie was Carlito's Way in 1993.
He worked with fellow actor Alberto Olmedo in many of these films. One movie they made together was Rambito y Rambón: Primera Misión from 1986. Some of their movies were made for older audiences, while others were suitable for families. Most of these films were directed by Gerardo Sofovich or his brother Hugo.
Porcel stopped making movies after Alberto Olmedo's accidental death. This event made Porcel very sad.
Television Shows
Porcel also had many popular TV shows. These included Operación Ja Ja and Polémica en el bar. On Polémica en el bar, he shared many funny moments with comedian Juan Carlos Altavista. The Sofovich brothers were often involved in these TV projects too. He also hosted a show called Las Gatitas Y Ratones de Porcel.
After he stopped making movies in Argentina, Jorge Porcel moved to Miami. He even opened a restaurant there called A La Pasta con Porcel in Miami Beach.
Later Life and Death
Over time, Porcel's health became worse. He struggled with obesity and diabetes. Because of his health, he needed to use a wheelchair in his later years.
In 1999, he traveled around Latin America to promote his book. The book was called Laughs, Applause and Tears. Around this time, he also became a born again Christian.
Jorge Porcel passed away in a hospital in Miami at age 69. He died after having gallbladder surgery. His body was flown back to Argentina and buried in the Chacarita Cemetery.
Music
Jorge Porcel loved music. In 1980, he recorded a bolero music album called Pure Heart. He often sang boleros in his TV shows. He sang on Las gatitas y ratones de Porcel and ¿Lo viste a Porcel?. He also sang with Rolo Puente on a record from the show Operación Ja-Já. They sang the song "Libre, solterito y sin nadie" by Leo Dan.
Comics
In the 1970s, a company called Cielosur Editora published comic magazines about TV characters. One of these magazines was called Las aventuras del Gordo Porcel. The comics, drawn by Francisco Mazza, showed Porcel getting into funny trouble. This usually happened between big meals prepared by his mother, who he lived with. Other characters in the comics included his girlfriend and his dog, Banana. Banana even had his own comic book!
