Starting His Boxing Journey
Jorge Solís began his professional boxing career in 1998 when he was 19 years old. His first fights mostly took place in Mexico. He won his very first fight on February 6, 1998, by a technical knockout (TKO). This means the referee stopped the fight because one boxer couldn't continue safely.
His first fight in the United States happened in 2000 in El Paso, Texas. He won that fight too, again by technical knockout in the sixth round.
Winning Championships
In 2001, Jorge Solís won the Mexican Super Bantamweight Championship. He successfully defended this title several times against other boxers.
In 2003, he fought for the WBC Latin America Super Featherweight Title. This fight ended in a draw, meaning neither boxer won.
A few years later, in 2004, Solís had a fight against Humberto Soto. This match ended in a "no contest" because Solís got a cut from an accidental clash of heads. The fight had to be stopped.
Big Fights and Challenges
Facing Manny Pacquiao
One of Jorge Solís's most famous fights was on April 14, 2007, against the boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao was a world champion at the time. The fight took place in San Antonio, Texas.
Many people thought Pacquiao would win easily, but Solís put up a very strong fight. He showed great skill and determination. However, Pacquiao was too powerful and eventually knocked out Solís in the eighth round. In the Philippines, this exciting match was called The Blaze of Glory.
After this tough loss, Jorge Solís quickly bounced back. He won his next fight by technical knockout in Guadalajara, Mexico. In 2009, he also won an important fight against Monty Meza Clay, which helped him get closer to another title shot.
Challenging Cristóbal Cruz
On July 11, 2009, Solís got a chance to fight for the IBF Featherweight title against Cristobal Cruz. Solís had beaten Cruz before, but this time, Cruz won by a unanimous decision. This means all the judges agreed that Cruz won the fight. During the match, points were taken away from both boxers for fouls. Solís lost points for hitting low, and Cruz lost points for headbutting.
After this fight, Solís moved up to a heavier weight class called Super Featherweight. He then won the WBA interim Super Featherweight title by technical knockout. He successfully defended this title in 2010 against Mario Santiago.
Fighting Yuriorkis Gamboa
On March 26, 2011, Jorge Solís faced another big challenge against the unified WBA World and IBF Featherweight Champion, Yuriorkis Gamboa. Gamboa was a very skilled boxer and completely dominated the fight. Solís was knocked out in the fourth round.
Jorge Solís had a long and exciting career, facing some of the best boxers in the world and winning many titles along the way. His final professional record was 41 wins (with 30 knockouts), 4 losses, 2 draws, and 1 no contest.
