José Antonio Maravall Casesnoves (born in Xàtiva in 1911, died in Madrid in 1986) was an important Spanish historian and writer. He was part of a group of thinkers known as the Generation of '36.

Life and Education
José Antonio Maravall studied philosophy and law at the University of Murcia. He later finished his studies in political science and economics at the Central University. There, he was a student of the famous philosopher Jose Ortega y Gasset.
Maravall became a university professor. He taught in Spain and in other countries. He led departments at the University of La Laguna and the Complutense University of Madrid. He also became a member of the Real Academia de la Historia, which is a very important historical academy. He was also the president of the Spanish Association of Historical Sciences.
During the time of Francoist Spain, a period when Spain was ruled by a dictator, Maravall avoided writing about very sensitive political topics. Instead, he wrote poetry. He also helped start a literary magazine called Nueva Revista ("New Magazine") with other writers.
His Important Work
Maravall's work on Spanish history is considered very important. He was an expert on the "Old Regime" of Monarchist Spain. This was a time when kings and queens ruled the country.
In 1987, he received the National Essay Prize. This award was given by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. The University of Toulouse in France also gave him an honorary degree. This was to recognize his valuable work.
His son, José María Maravall, later became the Education Minister. This happened in the first government of Felipe González in 1982.
