José "Chechu" Biriukov Aguirregaviria was a fantastic professional basketball player. He was born on February 3, 1963, in Moscow, which was then part of the Soviet Union. His father was Russian, and his mother had roots from the Basque people in Spain. José later became a Spanish citizen.
He started his basketball journey with the Dynamo Moscow team. When he was 20 years old, he moved to Spain. There, he joined the famous Real Madrid basketball club. He played for Real Madrid for 11 seasons! He also played for the USSR national team in 22 games. Later, he played 67 games for the Spain men's national basketball team.
José played as a Shooting guard. This position means he was great at scoring points. He was known for his excellent three-point shots. He had a special way of shooting the ball, making it fly quite flat towards the basket. One of his most famous international games was in 1988. He played in the McDonald's Open against the legendary Boston Celtics from the USA.
