Early Days of the Town
In the late 1800s, this place was a simple settlement. It was known as Drovandi Town. This name came from the Drovandi family, who owned the land.
The Arrival of the Railway
A big change happened in 1901. The San José-Mercedes railway line opened. This brought the Drabble Station to the area. The station was named after George Drabble. He was a British businessman who helped build railways in Uruguay and Argentina.
Growing into a Modern Town
By the 1930s, the town started to get important services. These included things like electricity and water. This helped the community grow even more. Between 1963 and 1996, the number of people living here increased by 40%.
Official Recognition and Name Change
On June 12, 1924, the settlement became officially recognized as a "Pueblo." A "Pueblo" is a Spanish word for a village. At this time, its name changed to José Enrique Rodó. This honored the famous Uruguayan writer who had passed away in 1917. Later, on November 17, 1964, its status was raised again. It became a "Villa," which means a town.
