José Eulogio Gárate Ormaechea (born September 20, 1944) is a famous former football player. He was a striker, which means he played at the front of the team and scored goals. Gárate played for several clubs, but he is best known for his time at Atlético Madrid. He was born in Argentina but played for the Spanish national team.

Playing for Clubs

José Gárate was born in Argentina to parents from the Basque region of Spain. He grew up in Eibar, Spain. He started his football journey with SD Eibar in 1960. Later, in 1963, he moved to SD Indautxu.

In 1966, Gárate joined Atlético Madrid, a big club in Spain. He became a very important player for them. He played alongside other great players like Luis Aragonés and Javier Irureta. Together, they made Atlético Madrid a very successful team in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Gárate helped Atlético Madrid win the top Spanish league, La Liga, three times. They also won the Spanish Cup (then called the Copa del Generalísimo) twice. He even helped them reach the final of the European Cup and win the Intercontinental Cup.

He was known for scoring many goals. He won the Pichichi trophy, which is given to the top scorer in La Liga, three years in a row (from 1968 to 1970). Gárate also scored the winning goals in the Spanish Cup finals in 1972 and 1976. During his time at Atlético, he played 241 games and scored 135 goals.

Playing for Spain

Gárate also played for the Spanish national team. He played 18 games for Spain and scored 5 goals. His first game for Spain was on October 22, 1967, against Czechoslovakia. His last game was on April 17, 1975, against Romania.

Even though he was a great player, Spain did not qualify for big tournaments like the European Championships or the World Cup during his time. This means he never got to play in the final stages of a major international competition.
