In 1966, Gárate joined Atlético Madrid, a big club in Spain. He became a very important player for them. He played alongside other great players like Luis Aragonés and Javier Irureta. Together, they made Atlético Madrid a very successful team in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Gárate helped Atlético Madrid win the top Spanish league, La Liga, three times. They also won the Spanish Cup (then called the Copa del Generalísimo) twice. He even helped them reach the final of the European Cup and win the Intercontinental Cup.
