José Jerónimo Triana Silva was a famous Colombian scientist. He was born on May 22, 1828, in Bogotá, Colombia. He passed away on October 31, 1890, in Paris, France. Triana was a botanist, which means he studied plants. He was also an explorer and a physician (a doctor).

He became very well-known for his work with plants. He found and described over 60,000 plant samples. These samples represented about 8,000 different types of species (kinds of plants).

His Work as a Botanist

In 1851, José Jerónimo Triana joined a special group called the Chorographic Commission. This group explored Colombia and mapped its geography. Triana was in charge of the botany section. He worked with them until 1857.

During his time with the commission, he collected many plants. He created an herbarium, which is like a collection of dried plants. His herbarium had more than 2,200 different plant samples. This collection helped scientists learn a lot about Colombia's plant life.

His Work as a Physician and Author

Besides being a botanist, Triana was also a physician. He used his knowledge to create health products. He sold these products in France. Some of his inventions included special bandages for corns, powder toothpaste, and cough syrup.

Like his father, Triana also wrote books for schools. These books helped children in Colombia learn to read and write. His books were used in many classrooms.

Important Plant Discoveries

José Jerónimo Triana cataloged many new plant species. Here are some examples of plants he helped identify:

  • Acisanthera alsinaefolia (DC.) Triana
  • Miconia albicans (Sw.) Triana
  • Miconia candolleana Triana
  • Passiflora quadrangularis Triana and Planch

Later Life

José Jerónimo Triana died in Paris. Sadly, his daughter Liboria passed away just one day after him. After Triana's death, his wife returned to Bogotá. She died a few years later in 1895.

  • New genera and species of plants for neogranadina flora (1855)
