José María Fenollera e Ibáñez (born December 10, 1851 – died December 6, 1918) was a Spanish painter. He was most famous for painting portraits of people.

His Life and Art

José María Fenollera studied art at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos. This was a famous art school in Spain. Later, he received a special scholarship. This scholarship allowed him to live and study in Rome for five years. He was there from 1872 to 1877.

After Rome, he traveled to Paris, France. In Paris, he learned a new technique called photoengraving. This is a way to print pictures using a special process. He then moved to Madrid, the capital of Spain. There, he created designs for the Royal Tapestry Factory. This factory made beautiful woven artworks called tapestries. He also decorated a popular place called the Café de Fornos.

In 1887, José María moved to Santiago de Compostela. This city is in a region of Spain called Galicia. He became a professor at the School of Fine Arts there. He also joined a movement called Galician regionalism. This movement focused on promoting the culture and identity of Galicia.

He spent most of his time painting portraits of important people from Galicia. These included the writer Alfredo Brañas and other notable figures. He also painted a series of portraits of the presidents of the Sociedad Económica de los Amigos del País. This was a group that worked to improve the economy and society. Later, he painted large wall paintings, called frescoes, at the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela.

In 1890, he married Consuelo Velón y González-Pardo. She came from a noble family in Galicia.

José María Fenollera won a gold medal in 1909. He received this honor at a special exhibition called the Exposición Rexional.
