José María Larios's Military Life
Fighting in the Siege of Cuautla
José María Larios was part of José María Morelos's army during the Siege of Cuautla in 1812. This was a very tough battle where Morelos's forces were surrounded by Spanish troops. A Mexican historian named José María Luis Mora wrote about Larios's involvement in his book Méjico y sus revoluciones.
Records show that on January 25, 1814, General Morelos gave Larios a special job. He was sent to Coyuca to gather people and weapons. His mission was to bring these resources to Cuautla (which is now called Cuautla, Morelos) and the area of Chalco. This shows how much Morelos trusted Larios with important tasks.
Stopping the Spanish Invasion of 1829
In November 1828, there was a disagreement over who should be president of Mexico. Manuel Gómez Pedraza won the election, but Vicente Guerrero's supporters were not happy. This led to some unrest.
In this situation, on August 3, 1829, José María Larios created a special plan in the city of Morelos (which is now Cuautla). His plan was designed to fight against a new attempt by Spain to take back control of Mexico. This invasion was led by a Spanish general named Isidro Barradas.
Larios's plan had several key ideas. It suggested that Vicente Guerrero should be a powerful leader for life. It also proposed that the properties of Spaniards and other foreigners in Mexico should become national property. Larios also named his own group the "Primera Columna Justiciera del Sur" (First Righteous Column of the South). Their goal was to fight the invaders in Veracruz.
