Early Life and Independence
Growing Up and Fighting for Freedom
José María Pérez de Urdininea was born on October 31, 1784. His birthplace was a large farm called Anquioma, near a town called Luribay. He first studied at a school in La Paz and then later in Cochabamba.
In 1809, he joined the fight for Bolivia's independence from Spain. He fought in a battle called the Battle of Huaqui. After being hurt, he went to Argentina. There, he joined the army led by Manuel Belgrano. He fought in important battles like the Battle of Tucumán and the Battle of Salta. From 1811 to 1821, he served under other famous Argentine leaders. These included José Rondeau, Martín Miguel de Güemes, and José de San Martín.
Governor and Royalist Surrender
From 1822 to 1823, Pérez de Urdininea served as the Governor of San Juan Province in Argentina. He helped create an army of 500 men. This army was led by José María Paz. Their goal was to enter and fight in Upper Peru (which is now Bolivia).
In early 1825, he worked with Juan Antonio Álvarez de Arenales. Arenales was the Governor of Salta. Together, they received the surrender of the last Spanish royalist leader. This happened in the area of Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata.
Becoming President of Bolivia
Serving as Acting President
Antonio José de Sucre, who was the first president of Bolivia, brought Pérez de Urdininea into the Bolivian Army. On December 9, 1827, Sucre made him the Minister of War. Later, he became the President of the Council of Ministers.
Because of these roles, he took charge of the government on April 18, 1828. This happened after President Sucre was injured during an army uprising. Pérez de Urdininea was accused of not stopping an invasion by Agustín Gamarra. After this, he left public life for over ten years. He went to live on one of his estates.
Later Military Service and Death
In 1838, Marshal Andrés de Santa Cruz brought him back into the army. Santa Cruz was then the President of Bolivia. He was also the Protector of the Peru–Bolivian Confederation. Pérez de Urdininea took part in the Battle of Yungay. This battle led to the end of the Peru-Bolivian Confederation.
He served as Minister of War again in later governments. He held this position during the time of José Ballivián in 1843. He also served under Jorge Córdova from 1855 to 1857. José María Pérez de Urdininea passed away on November 4, 1865.
