Biography
Early Life and Military Career
Eusebio Guilarte was born in La Paz, which is now part of Bolivia, in 1805. He chose a career in the military, which was common at that time. Guilarte fought in several important battles. He served under a famous leader named Andrés de Santa Cruz at the Battle of Zepita. He also took part in battles during the War of the Confederation, like Yanacocha and Uchumayo.
Rise to Power
Guilarte was a trusted aide to President José Ballivián. He fought alongside Ballivián at the Battle of Ingavi. For his bravery and loyalty, he was made the Ambassador to Brazil. Later, President Ballivián called Guilarte back to Bolivia. He appointed him to the powerful Council of State. This council helped the president make important decisions.
However, President Ballivián faced many challenges. There were many plots against him, especially from a rival named Manuel Belzu. Ballivián found it hard to stay in power. In late 1847, he decided to leave the country. He handed over his power to General Guilarte.
President of Bolivia
A Short Term
As the head of the Council of State, Eusebio Guilarte became the new president. This happened on December 23, 1847. However, the political situation was very difficult. Manuel Belzu and his supporters were getting closer to the capital city. Guilarte's presidency mostly allowed Ballivián to escape safely.
Guilarte tried to make peace with the rebel groups. But he was not successful. In less than two weeks, on January 2, 1848, Belzu's forces overthrew him.
Later Life and Death
After being removed from power, Guilarte was placed under house arrest. He was sent to Cobija, a port city on the Pacific coast. Less than two years later, in 1849, Guilarte tried to organize a new plot. He wanted to regain power. However, one of his own officers revealed the plan. Because of this, Guilarte was killed. This happened by order of the military governor of the region, who supported Belzu.
