Early Life and Studies

José María Posada Pereira was born in Vigo, Spain, in 1817. He studied many subjects, including humanities and theology. Later, he studied law at the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. He finished his law studies in 1845.

A Creative Mind

In 1840, when he was still young, Posada started an arts and literature academy in Santiago. This academy brought together many of the best creative people in the area. In 1845, he also founded a magazine called La Aurora de Galicia. This magazine focused on literature, science, and art.

Between 1851 and 1852, Posada lived in Madrid to study painting. He then moved back to Vigo.

Journalism and Writing

In 1852, José María Posada started a newspaper called El Faro de Vigo. This newspaper is still printed today and is one of the oldest in Spain! Many of his writings appeared in this newspaper.

While in Vigo, he often used the pen name Don Lucas. Under this name, he published funny stories and poems in Galician. He also wrote "legends," which are like traditional stories.

His Books and Poetry

In 1866, Posada wrote a book of memories called Un paseo de Vigo a Bayona. This title means 'A Stroll from Vigo to Bayonne'.

His collected poems were published after he died in a book called Poesías Selectas (Selected Poetry). This book came out in 1888. Some of his poems were cheerful and happy. Others were meant to inspire people.

Over time, Posada sometimes felt a deep sadness, known as la saudade. You can see this feeling in his poem Carta a Ampariño (A Letter to Ampariño).

His "legends" were inspired by old Spanish songs and stories. Two famous ones are Rosalida and La Bella Infanta (The Beautiful Infant). Rosalida was even influenced by a children's song called Romance del Conde Olinos.
