José María Romero López (born May 12, 1815, in Seville, Spain – died 1894, in Madrid, Spain) was a Spanish painter. He painted in the Romantic style, which was popular during his time. Some records suggest he might have passed away in 1880 or 1888, but 1894 is the most common date.

About His Life and Art

We don't know much about José María Romero López's early life. In 1838, he was already working as an artist. He joined a group called the Real Sociedad Económica Sevillana de Amigos del País. He didn't pay money to join. Instead, he gave them a painting called "The Coronation of the Drunkards." They also thanked him for some cabinetmaking work he had done.

In 1840, he started teaching drawing at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de Sevilla, an art school in Seville. Later, in 1848, he began teaching sketching classes. The next year, he worked at the Palacio de San Telmo, doing art for Antoine, Duke of Montpensier.

From 1860 to 1866, he was a member of another important art group, the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría. He often showed his paintings at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts from 1840 to 1879. This was a big event where artists could show their best work.

In 1866, José María moved to Cádiz. There, he also joined the Real Academia Provincia del Bellas Artes de Cádiz, another art academy. He stayed there until 1875, when he likely went back to Seville. In 1879, he settled in Madrid. In Madrid, he mostly painted portraits of people and some religious artworks.

By 1889, he was in Málaga. He worked as a professor teaching about color and how to arrange things in a painting (composition) at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Telmo. He taught there until 1893. At that time, he was older and his health wasn't good, so he decided to retire. He was buried in Madrid in 1894.

You can see his paintings not only in museums in Spain but also in Cuba. Some of his works are displayed at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana in Havana.
