José Maria de Eça de Queirós (born November 25, 1845 – died August 16, 1900) was a very important Portuguese writer. Many people think he was the greatest Portuguese writer who used the realist style. This means his stories tried to show life exactly as it was, without making things seem more romantic or exciting than they really were.
A famous French writer named Émile Zola even thought Eça de Queirós was better than another well-known writer, Gustave Flaubert. In a newspaper called Observer, a writer named Jonathan Keates said Eça de Queirós was as good as famous authors like Charles Dickens, Honoré de Balzac, and Leo Tolstoy. This shows how highly people thought of his writing!
During his lifetime, his name was often spelled Eça de Queiroz. You might still see this spelling on older books. Today, the standard way to spell it in Portuguese is "Eça de Queirós".
Who Was Eça de Queirós?
José Maria de Eça de Queirós was born in Póvoa de Varzim, a town in Portugal. He grew up to become a novelist, which means he wrote many books. He also worked as a consul, which is like a diplomat who represents his country in another land. This job took him to different places, including Neuilly-sur-Seine in France, where he passed away.
His Writing Style: Realism
Eça de Queirós is best known for his realist novels. The realist movement in literature aimed to show everyday life and society as truthfully as possible. Writers like Eça de Queirós focused on details and characters that felt real. They often explored the problems and changes happening in society during their time. His books give us a peek into what life was like in Portugal in the 1800s.
One of his most famous books is Os Maias. It's a long story about a Portuguese family and their lives. This book is a great example of his realist style.
