After many years as a priest, José Mario Ruiz Navas was chosen for bigger roles. In 1968, he became the bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Latacunga in Ecuador. He served the people in this area for a long time, until 1989.
Becoming an Archbishop
In 1989, he moved to a new role. He became the bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Portoviejo, also in Ecuador. Later, he was given the title of archbishop. He continued to lead the Church in Portoviejo until 2007.
Later Years
José Mario Ruiz Navas passed away on December 10, 2020, in Latacunga, Ecuador. He was 90 years old. He is remembered for his long service and dedication to the Catholic Church in Ecuador.
