José Martí y Monsó (born January 4, 1840, in Valencia; died December 14, 1912, in Valladolid) was a talented Spanish painter. He was also a respected art professor, a careful researcher, and worked in museums. People thought he was an expert on art from the Castilian region and knew a lot about the history of Holy Week in Valladolid.

Biography

Early Life and Art Studies

José Martí y Monsó moved to Madrid when he was young. He joined a famous art school called the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. There, he learned from important teachers like Luis Ferrant and Federico de Madrazo. He also took extra art lessons from Antonio Gómez Cros.

After 1860, José often showed his paintings at a big art show called the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. In 1864, he received an honorable mention for a painting. It showed a scene from the Esquilache Riots, which was a historical protest. In 1866, he won a third-class medal for his painting called "The Grape Harvest."

Career in Art and Education

After 1873, José Martí y Monsó started teaching art while still painting. He became the Director of the "Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Valladolid" (School of Arts and Crafts). He was also chosen to look after the art collection at the Museo de Valladolid. The next year, he became the Director of the Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes. He kept this important job until he passed away. In 1900, he was made a member of the "Real Academia de Bellas Artes de la Purísima Concepción."

Writings and Legacy

José Martí y Monsó also wrote books about art. These included Catálogo provisional del Museo de Pintura y Escultura de Valladolid (1874). He also wrote Estudios histórico-artísticos relativos a Valladolid (1898-1901). He also wrote for Castilla artística e histórica. This was a newsletter from the "Sociedad Castellana de Excursiones," started by Narciso Alonso Cortés in 1903. Today, a plaza in Valladolid is named in his honor.
