José Milla y Vidaurre (born August 4, 1822, died September 30, 1882) was a very famous writer from Guatemala. He was born and died in Guatemala City. People also knew him as Pepe Milla or by his pen name, Salomé Jil.
His father, José Justo de la Milla y Pineda, was a governor in Honduras. His mother, Mercedes Vidaurre Molina, came from a wealthy family in Guatemala. José Milla married his cousin, Mercedes Vidaurre. They had seven children together.
José Milla grew up when Guatemala was going through big changes. Different groups, called liberals and conservatives, often argued and caused problems. His family was wealthy. He wasn't a main political leader, but he supported conservative ideas. He even worked for the government when conservatives were in power.
José Milla wrote many types of stories. He was best known for his novels, especially historical novels. These books often showed what life was like in Guatemala when it was a Spanish colony. He also wrote "novelas costumbristas." These stories described the daily lives and traditions of Guatemalan people.
