Playing Career
Time at Racing Santander
José Moratón was born in Santander, a city in Cantabria. He started his professional career with his hometown club, Racing de Santander. His first game was on December 13, 1998. It was a La Liga match against CD Tenerife that ended in a 0–0 draw.
In the 2001–02 season, Racing was in the Segunda División, Spain's second division. Moratón scored a very important goal at their home stadium, Campos de Sport de El Sardinero. This goal helped Racing win and return to the top league, La Liga, after just one year away.
Moratón became one of the team's captains. However, he got a serious injury that made him miss most of the 2006–07 season. The next season, 2007–08, he played 18 games. This season was special because Racing qualified for the UEFA Europa League for the first time ever.
In the next two seasons in La Liga, Moratón was mostly a backup player. Still, he played in 23 matches in total. His contributions helped Racing stay in the top league. He also helped his team reach the semi-finals of the 2009–10 Copa del Rey, a major Spanish cup competition. He even scored a goal in a 3–2 win against AD Alcorcón. In June 2010, he left Racing de Santander, ending almost two decades with the club.
Moving to Salamanca
For the 2010–11 season, Moratón played for UD Salamanca in the second division. He started in all the games he played and scored five goals. This was the most goals he had ever scored in a single season. However, his team was relegated, meaning they moved down to a lower league. In June 2011, at 32 years old, José Moratón decided to retire from professional football.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, José Moratón began his coaching career. He first took charge of Racing Santander's Under-19 team for the 2011-12 season. After that, he worked for a few years as a coach at the Cantabrian Football Federation.
In June 2016, Moratón became the manager of Racing B, which is Racing Santander's reserve team. He extended his contract for another year in July 2017. From 2018 to 2020, he managed CD Bezana. Then, on May 23, 2020, he signed with UM Escobedo. He decided to resign from that position on May 27, 2021.
On May 24, 2022, he was appointed as the assistant manager for CD Laredo.
