Kids Encyclopedia Facts

José Domingo Posada González (born May 9, 1940, died January 14, 2013) was an important person from Galicia, Spain. He was a politician who served in the European Parliament from 1994 to 1999. He also led a political group called Galician Coalition. This group focused on the needs and identity of the Galicia region.

A Voice for Galicia

José Posada became well-known in 1994. This was because he was the first person in the European Parliament to use the Galician language. He used it in his speeches and in his written messages. This was allowed because Galician is very similar to Portuguese. Portuguese is one of the official languages of the European Union. Because he strongly supported the Galician language, many people saw him as a "reintegrationist." This means he believed Galician should be seen as closely connected to Portuguese.

Business and Legacy

Besides his political work, José Posada also had a successful business. He owned a factory that started in 1955. This factory became one of the biggest producers of "marron glacé" in Spain. Marron glacé are sweet chestnuts, a popular treat. He passed away on January 14, 2013.]
