José Romeo (born 1701, died 1772) was a talented Spanish painter from the Baroque period. This was a time when art was very grand and dramatic.
Biography
José Romeo was born in a place called Cervera de la Cañada in Aragón, Spain. He painted some dark and powerful pictures that reminded people of another famous painter named Salvator Rosa.
He started his art studies in Zaragoza. Later, he received a special scholarship to study in Rome, Italy. There, he learned from a well-known artist named Agostino Massuci.
After his studies, José Romeo returned to Barcelona. Then, he moved to Madrid to become a special painter for the king, Felipe V. This meant he worked directly for the royal family.
He also helped to fix and restore old paintings at the palacio del Buen Retiro (which is now called Casón del buen Retiro). During the time of King Fernando VI, José Romeo worked with another artist named Santiago Amigoni. Together, they helped paint a room called the Hall of Conversation.
