Lagomarsino commanded a special warship called the Manco Cápac. He is most known for defending the city of Arica during a time when it was surrounded by enemy ships. This included a victory in the Naval Battle of Arica against a Chilean warship called the Huáscar.

Arica eventually fell during the Battle of Arica. To stop his ship from being captured by the enemy, Lagomarsino made the difficult decision to sink the Manco Cápac on purpose.

A Peruvian Naval Hero

Joining the Navy

José Sánchez Lagomarsino started his naval career in 1858. He served in the Peruvian Navy for many years, becoming a skilled captain. He gained experience fighting in the Chincha Islands War, including the Battle of Callao. This helped prepare him for bigger challenges ahead.

The War of the Pacific

Lagomarsino became famous during the War of the Pacific (1879-1884). This was a major conflict between Chile and the combined forces of Peru and Bolivia. Lagomarsino played a key role in defending Peru's coast.

Defending Arica

Captain Lagomarsino was in charge of the Peruvian monitor Manco Cápac. A monitor was a type of warship with heavy armor and powerful guns. The city of Arica was very important, and Chilean forces tried to block it off. This was known as the Blockade of Arica.

During this blockade, Lagomarsino's Manco Cápac faced off against the Chilean ironclad Huáscar. An ironclad was another type of armored warship. In the Naval Battle of Arica, Lagomarsino and his crew managed to defeat the Huáscar. This was a big victory for Peru.

The Fall of Arica

Despite the naval victory, the land battle for Arica continued. The Chilean army attacked the city in the Battle of Arica. The Peruvian defenders fought bravely, but Arica eventually fell to the Chilean forces.

To prevent the Manco Cápac from being captured and used by the enemy, Captain Lagomarsino made a tough choice. He ordered his crew to sink their own ship. This meant opening holes in the ship's hull so it would fill with water and go down. This way, the Manco Cápac would not fall into Chilean hands.

José Sánchez Lagomarsino is remembered as a brave naval officer who fought with courage to defend his country.
