José Maria Viñals Íñiguez (born on June 20, 1954) is an important Spanish expert in economics and business. He is currently the Group Chairman of Standard Chartered, which is a big international bank. He also leads Standard Chartered Bank, which is the part of the bank located in the United Kingdom.
Early Life and Education
José Viñals was born in Madrid, Spain, on June 20, 1954. He loved learning about economics from a young age. He went to the University of Valencia and earned his first degree in economics in 1976.
He continued his studies, getting a master's degree in economics from the London School of Economics in 1977. Later, he earned a PhD, which is the highest university degree, from Harvard University in 1981.
Career Journey
José Viñals started his career as a professor. He taught economics at Stanford University from 1981 to 1986. This was his first job after finishing his studies.
After teaching, he worked for the Bank of Spain, which is like the central bank of Spain. He was there for a long time, from 1986 until 2006. When he left, he was the deputy governor, which is a very high position.
From 2009 to 2016, José Viñals worked for the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF is an organization that helps countries around the world with their money problems. He was a top advisor on money and markets there. He also spoke for the IMF about how stable the world's money systems were.
In December 2016, José Viñals became the Group Chairman of Standard Chartered. He took over this important role from John Peace. As chairman, he helps lead the entire Standard Chartered group.
