José Maria Viñals Íñiguez (born June 20, 1954) is an important Spanish expert in economics and business. He is currently the Group Chairman of Standard Chartered, which is a big international bank. He also leads Standard Chartered Bank, which is the part of the company based in the United Kingdom.
Early Life and Education
José Viñals was born in Madrid, Spain, on June 20, 1954. He studied economics at the University of Valencia, where he earned his first degree in 1976. He then went on to get a master's degree in economics from the London School of Economics in 1977. Later, he earned a PhD, which is a very high academic degree, from Harvard University in 1981.
Career Highlights
Mr. Viñals started his career teaching economics at Stanford University from 1981 to 1986.
After teaching, he worked as an economist for the Bank of Spain from 1986 to 2006. The Bank of Spain is like the central bank of Spain, helping to manage the country's money. He eventually became the deputy governor there, which is a very senior position.
From 2009 to 2016, Mr. Viñals worked for the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF is an international organization that helps countries with their money problems and works to keep the global financial system stable. At the IMF, he was the financial counsellor and director of the department that deals with money and financial markets. He was also the main spokesperson for the IMF on important money matters around the world.
On December 1, 2016, José Viñals became the Group Chairman of Standard Chartered. In this role, he leads the entire Standard Chartered group, which operates in many countries.
