José Manuel de Bastos (born October 17, 1929 – died November 24, 2020) was a famous Portuguese football player. He was a talented goalkeeper. José Bastos joined the Benfica team when he was young. He became their youngest goalkeeper to play in the first team in 1950.
Bastos helped Benfica win the Latin Cup in 1950. They beat Bordeaux in that final game. He was the last player from that winning team who was still alive. He played for Benfica until 1961. During this time, his team won three national league titles. They also won five Taça de Portugal cups. After Benfica, Bastos played for Beira-Mar and Atlético Clube de Portugal. From 1978 to 1980, he was the manager for G.D. Estoril Praia.

José Bastos's Early Life
José Bastos was born in Albergaria-a-Velha, Portugal. When he was young, he loved sports. He was good at high jump, jumping 1.75 meters (about 5 feet 9 inches). He also enjoyed running races.
Later, he started playing football. He played for youth teams like Desportivo de Castelo and Benfica. He first tried out for Benfica as a regular player. About 500 other kids were also trying out. But when the chosen goalkeeper got hurt, José stepped in. He did so well that he was picked for the team.
Playing for Benfica
Bastos joined Benfica's main team in 1949. He became the team's starting goalkeeper. His first game was on March 12, 1950, against Lusitano. That season, Benfica won the league title. José Bastos was the youngest goalkeeper to play for Benfica. This record stood until 2002.
On June 18, 1950, Bastos played in the Latin Cup final. Benfica won against Bordeaux at the Estádio Nacional. This was a big win for the team.
Bastos was Benfica's main goalkeeper until 1954. Then, another great goalkeeper, Alberto da Costa Pereira, took his place. For two seasons, Bastos was a backup player. He got his starting spot back in the 1956–57 season. But he lost it again for good during the 1958–59 season.
His coach, Béla Guttmann, sent him on loan to Atlético CP. José Bastos played his last game for Benfica on April 16, 1961. It was a Taça de Portugal match against Olhanense. In total, Bastos played 196 games for Benfica. He helped the team win three national championships. They also won five Taça de Portugal cups.
Later Football Career and Life
After leaving Benfica, Bastos continued his football career. He played for Beira-Mar and then for Atlético again.
From the middle of 1978 to 1980, he became a manager. He managed the team Estoril–Praia. José Bastos passed away on November 24, 2020. He was 91 years old. He was the last player alive from the Benfica team that won the Latin Cup in 1950.
