José de la Torre Ugarte, a Peruvian lyricist

José de la Torre Ugarte y Alarcón (born March 19, 1786 – died September 1, 1831) was a Peruvian writer who wrote the words for songs. He is most famous for writing the lyrics (words) of the National Anthem of Peru.

He was born to Estanislao de la Torre Ugarte and Mercedes Alarcón Manrique. José finished his school studies at San Luis Gonzaga de Ica. Later, he went to the National University of San Marcos. There, he earned a degree in Arts between 1809 and 1812. He also studied law and was allowed to practice as a lawyer in 1810.

Helping Peru Become Independent

José de la Torre Ugarte was one of the important people in Lima. He was asked to help decide if Peru should become independent from Spain. On July 15, 1821, he signed the Act of Independence. This was a very important document that declared Peru's freedom.

During the time when José de la Riva Agüero was in charge, José de la Torre Ugarte became a senior officer. He worked in the Ministry of War in 1821. In 1823, he moved to Trujillo. He was almost shot by order of Simón Bolívar, a famous leader. Luckily, Marshal Antonio Gutiérrez de la Fuente helped him and saved his life.

José de la Torre Ugarte was also given the rank of colonel. In May 1830, he became a member of the superior court in Trujillo. This meant he helped make important legal decisions.

Family Life

In 1812, José de la Torre Ugarte married Manuela Valdivieso and Rizo de la Prada in San Jerónimo de Ica. They had three children together.

His Famous Songs

José de la Torre Ugarte wrote the words for the National Anthem of Peru. The music for the anthem was written by José Bernardo Alcedo. He also wrote the lyrics for another patriotic song called "La Chicha." This song also had music by Alcedo.

Later in his life, he officially became a lawyer. He also worked as a war auditor in 1827. This role involved checking military finances. In 1830, he became a member of the Superior Court again. José de la Torre Ugarte passed away in Trujillo in 1831.
