Jose Miguel Tuason Arroyo (born June 27, 1945), also known as Mike Arroyo, is a Filipino lawyer. He is best known as the husband of former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
He was the First Gentleman of the Philippines from 2001 to 2010. This title is given to the husband of a female president. He was the first and, so far, only male spouse of a Philippine President.
Family Life
Jose Miguel Arroyo is the son of Ignacio Lacson Arroyo and Lourdes Zaragoza Tuason. He has a brother, Ignacio Arroyo Jr., and a sister, Maria Lourdes.
In 1968, Jose Miguel married Maria Gloria Macaraeg Macapagal. They have three children together:
- Juan Miguel, also known as "Mikey"
- Evangelina Lourdes, known as "Luli"
- Diosdado, known as "Dato"
Their daughter Luli married J. Aloysius "Luigi" Bernas in 2008.
Public Role
In the 1960s, before his wife became president, Mr. Arroyo was involved in publishing. He was the publisher of a magazine for teenagers called Teenstone.
When his wife became president, Jose Miguel Arroyo took on the role of First Gentleman. One of his main projects was to help raise money for Filipino athletes. This money was used to train them for the 2005 Southeast Asian Games. The Philippines was the host country for these games that year.
Health Challenges
Jose Miguel Arroyo has faced some health challenges. In 2007, he had a major heart surgery. Doctors performed this surgery after finding a problem with his aorta, a large blood vessel. The surgery was successful, and he recovered well after about three weeks in the hospital.
However, his health has been described as "questionable" since then. He had serious stomach pains in 2008, which led to an emergency landing of his plane. He also had another heart-related hospital visit in 2010.
Awards and Honors
Jose Miguel Arroyo has received special honors from other countries:
Grand Cordon of the Order of the Paulownia Flowers from Japan (2002)
Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic from Spain (2007)
