Josefa "Gigi" Francisco (1954 - 22 July 2015) was a champion for fairness, equal rights for girls and women, and a better world for everyone. She was from the Philippines.

Gigi went to Miriam College (which used to be called Maryknoll). She helped make the college's international studies program stronger. She even led the International Studies Department there.

She was a well-known leader for women's rights from the 'Global South'. This term refers to countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Gigi helped start important groups like the Women and Gender Institute (WAGI) at Miriam College. She also helped create the International Gender and Trade Network (IGTN). She led a group called Development Alternatives with Women for a New Era (DAWN).

Gigi was on the board of many groups that work to help people. She also advised the United Nations. She helped them understand how to make sure everyone, especially women and girls, is treated fairly and included.

Gigi's Important Work

Gigi Francisco is remembered for her amazing contributions. Her friends say she did "groundbreaking research." This research was about how gender affects poverty and how to build a movement for women's rights.

She loved helping young women learn how to fight for women's rights. Gigi was a member of ISIS International from 1998 to 2002. This group works for women's rights around the world.

Later, she became the executive director of the Women and Gender Institute (WAGI). This group has been offering online courses about women's rights for several years.

Gigi was also a member of the Organization for Development Alternatives for Women in a New Era (DAWN). This group shares the voices and ideas of women from the Global South with the rest of the world. Gigi was the global coordinator for DAWN.

The United Nations and DAWN worked together in the Asia-Pacific region. Gigi led this important work. Their findings were published in a book called The Future The Asia Pacific Women Want in 2015.

Gigi also led the Department of International Studies at Miriam College. There, she worked to help women become leaders. She did important research on poverty, gender, development, and the movement for women's rights.
