Early Life and Education
Josep Maria Fradera was born in Mataró, Spain, in 1952. When he was young, he was involved in activism against the Franco dictatorship. He was also a member of the Unified Socialist Party of Catalonia (PSUC).
He started his university studies in 1971. He attended the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). In 1983, he earned his PhD from the UAB. For his PhD, he wrote a long research paper called a dissertation. His dissertation was about the colonial crisis and the local market in Catalonia.
Academic Career and Research
From 1987 to 1988, Professor Fradera worked as a research assistant. He helped a famous historian named John H. Elliott. This work took place at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, USA.
In 1996, he became a full professor. He teaches Contemporary History at the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF). He has also been a visiting scholar at other well-known universities. These include the University of Chicago and Harvard University's Center For European Studies. He is also a researcher for the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA).
Professor Fradera writes his historical works in both Spanish and Catalan.
