About Josep Pons
Josep Pons was born in Puig-reig, a town in Catalonia, Spain. He started his musical journey at a young age. He studied music at L'Escolania de Montserrat, which is a famous music school. Later, he continued his studies in Barcelona. There, he learned about composing music and how to conduct an orchestra.
His Career in Music
Josep Pons has had a very busy and successful career. He has worked with many different orchestras and musical groups.
Early Career and New Orchestras
In 1985, Josep Pons started his own group called the Orquestra de Cambra Teatre Lliure. This was a chamber orchestra, which is a smaller group of musicians. From 1988 to 1990, he also directed the Coral Càrmina, a choir.
Leading Big Events and Orchestras
A big moment in his career was in 1992. He was the musical director for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. This meant he was in charge of all the music for the event.
From 1993 to 2001, he was the first artistic director of the Jove Orquestra Simfònica de Catalunya. This group later became known as the Jove Orquestra Nacional de Catalunya. It's an orchestra for young musicians.
He also led the City of Granada Orchestra (Orquesta Ciudad de Granada) as its main conductor. He held this position from 1994 to 2004.
National and Opera House Roles
In 2003, Josep Pons became the artistic director and main conductor of the Spanish National Orchestra. This is one of the most important orchestras in Spain.
In 2010, he was chosen to be the music director for the Gran Teatre del Liceu. This is a very famous opera house in Barcelona. He started this role in September 2012. His contract there has been extended several times, showing how much they value his work. His latest extension means he will continue leading the Liceu until the 2025–2026 season.
In January 2024, it was announced that Josep Pons would become the chief conductor of the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern. He will start this new role with the 2025–2026 season.
Awards and Recognitions
Josep Pons has received many awards for his musical talents. He has made recordings for music companies like harmonia mundi. In 1992, he won the City of Barcelona Award. In 1999, he received the National Prize for Music from the Ministry of Culture. These awards show his important contributions to music.
