The Joseph Bell DeRemer House is a special house in Grand Forks, North Dakota. It was built in 1906 and has a unique style called Dutch Colonial Revival. This means it looks a bit like old Dutch farmhouses.

The house is located on Belmont Road, in an area known as the Near Southside Historic District. What makes this house extra cool is that it was designed by its first owner, Joseph Bell DeRemer. He was a famous architect! Even though it was a home for a family, it has fancy details and great quality, just like the bigger buildings DeRemer designed.

What Does the Joseph Bell DeRemer House Look Like?

The outside of the house is made of red brick. You can see this brick on the porch and the tall chimneys. The top floor used to be covered in a material called stucco. Now, it has metal siding.

The roof is shaped in a special way called a gambrel roof. This type of roof has two different slopes on each side. There are also windows sticking out from the roof, called dormers. You can spot decorative trim, like friezes (bands of decoration) and dentils (small block shapes). There's even a brick archway, called a pergola, on one side that matches the house perfectly.

Inside the House: Cool Details

When you step inside the Joseph Bell DeRemer House, you'll notice many classic designs. The ceilings have fancy moldings with dentils, similar to the outside. There are also pilaster strips, which look like flat columns on the walls.

Each room has a different and beautiful parquet floor. Parquet floors are made from small pieces of wood arranged in patterns. You can also find interesting details from different art styles inside. These include Craftsmen designs and Art Moderne touches.

Who Was Joseph Bell DeRemer?

Some of his most famous designs include the President's House at the University of North Dakota. He also designed the Masonic Temple and the United Lutheran Church, which has an Art Moderne style. One of his biggest projects was the North Dakota State Capitol skyscraper. Joseph DeRemer also designed other homes in the Grand Forks Near Southside Historic District.
